Giant squid prefer the deep sea, so it was a rare treat for onlookers in Toyama Bay harbour when one swam in. .

The incidental take of marine birds was estimated for the following North Pacific driftnet fisheries in Japanese squid, Japanese large-mesh, Korean squid, and Taiwanese squid and large-mesh combined. The take was estimated by assuming that the data represented a random sample from an unstratified population of all driftnet fisheries in the North Pacific. Fishing methods The ommastrephid squid are almost exclusively caught using jigs (lures) armed with barbless hooks which are fished in series on lines using automatic machines (Suzuki, ). The squid are attracted towards the jigs at night with incandescent, metal halide lamps suspended on cables above the deck of the vessel.

Are there any good piers to fish from around there? What are the best times of year to fish for squid around Tokyo (or really any part of Japan)? I'm curious if anyone has fished from piers in Japan and what part.
